Tiny Little Universe ALBUM LAUNCH w/ Tom Dickins

  • Open Studio

Join Alison Avron for a night celebrating the release of her debut album, Tiny Little Universe; a collection of songs inspired by her personal journey with grief after the sudden passing of her mother in 2014. The album was recorded at Milk House Studios in New York by multi-platinum award winning producer, Philip A. Jimenez – known for his work with the band, Wheatus.

Tiny Little Universe is a nod to influential songwriters including Harry Nilsson, Carole King and Brian Wilson. While parts of it are sad and sentimental, Avron offers an engaging, bright and light-hearted reflection on all aspects of grief.

The Newsagency 5th Birthday w/ Lola Sola & Fingermae

Yep! That's right! For 5 wonderful years, The Newsagency has hosted a plethora of local and independent Australian artists. To celebrate, founder and songwriter, Alison Avron will be hosting a monthly Thursday night showcase of artists she thinks are pretty awesome.

Celebrations continue with artist in-residence, Lola Sola and everyone's favourite local soundie cum muso, Fingermae

Lola Sola

With her roots in Aotearoa (NZ), Lola Sola is a singer-songwriter with a dynamic vocal range and emotive lyrics; blending folk, soul and a hint of blues. In late 2015, following a successful crowd-funding campaign, she went on to record an EP and tour New Zealand. Currently based in Sydney Australia, she has released her first studio album ‘Walking Back from Hell’, a stripped-back collection of originals recorded at A Sharp Recording Studios with producers, Richard Lake & Joe Sharratt.

Lola’s solo performances are intimate and captivating. Her shows are always developing with the different collaborative efforts of the musicians she works with.

‘Walking Back from Hell’ is a collection of honest song writing. Pairing haunting lyrics with delicate harmonies and simple guitar riffs, it sets a backdrop of an artist who has a powerful connection to her experiences and a lot more stories to tell.

Fingermae

Fingermae is a bitter soul who has been around a long time without achieving much. There's been a couple of band and performer names, a few releases but nothing resembling the widespread adulation she desperately craves to validate her existence.

Working as a sound engineer for the last few years she gradually built up a resentment towards those on the stage (as is so often the case with sound engineers). Instead of taking it out on the hapless idiots who dared to ignore the worksheet she decided to put this energy into a new attempt at a performing career, so with a collection of songs about people and things that have pissed her off over the last decade and the help of heaps of talented friends an album was recorded and will be released in the last quarter of 2016.

Keep an eye out for Fingermae's debut album Cured Using Natural Therapies which features performances from members of Bandintexas, Spookyland, TRIANGLE, No Illuminati, and The Spyglass Gypsies. It is also produced and recorded by Brian Campeau, who sings on the first single "I Work For The Bad Guys".

The Newsagency 5th Birthday w/ Sarah Belkner & Tom Dickins

Yep! That's right! For 5 wonderful years, The Newsagency has hosted a plethora of local and independent Australian artists. To celebrate, founder and songwriter, Alison Avron will be hosting a monthly Thursday night showcase of artists she thinks are pretty awesome.

Celebrations kick off with regular darlings to our tiny little stage, Sarah Belkner & Tom Dickins

Sarah Belkner

After the release of her highly touted EP 'HUMANS' in 2015, Belkner is back with her signature sound that ferries catchy, emotional lyrical depth and vocal ear candy for days to a rich beautifully strange world of complex, subtle and layered arrangements.

Produced by Sarah Belkner and her husband, highly renowned engineer Richard Belkner, at their studio Free Energy Device in Camperdown, Belkners work is both intricate and clear in its songwriting, performance, and production.

Alongside Belkner’s astonishing vocal performance sits an elite selection of singers in the backing vocal ranks including the 'Banshee Chorus' made up of local vocal mafia Elana Stone, NGAIIRE, Billie McCarthy and a guest croon from Brendan Maclean.

Belkner has just returned from touring the UK and Europe supporting Sarah Blasko and is currently the main support for the wonderful OLYMPIA's 'Self Talk' National album tour.

Tom Dickins

Tom Dickins is a singer-songwriter based in Melbourne. His genuinely original songs dance between genres and are delivered with THAT voice. His songs are dark in tone and uplifting in delivery. When he is not writing songs, he is often found collaborating on projects in Australia and abroad, including Amanda Palmer, Jagged Little Singalong, Romeo & Juliet

Jesse Younan Tribute Concert @ Camelot Lounge

This year’s show will sell out early at The Camelot Lounge, like it has almost every year !!

This is a special evening when a collection of some of Sydney's finest singer/songwriters pay tribute to Jesse Younan's masterful song writing by performing a collection of his song

Sydney singer/songwriter Jesse Younan passed away on 22 July, 2008 after a short battle with leukaemia after just finishing his fourth studio album 'A Good Day for a Migraine'.

The album has received outstanding critical acclaim and an ever increasing number of fans who have been deeply moved by Jesse's unique, beautiful singing and masterful song writing.

The night promises to be a moving and powerful celebration of a exceptionally tale...nted musician who used the magic of words and music to cope with life’s struggles. Jesse left behind a rich catalogue of beautiful and haunting music available through Vitamin Records and iTunes. His music has featured on ‘Packed to the Rafters’ (Channel 7) and ‘East of Everything’ (ABC).

“There is no softness in a Jesse Younan song but there is much tenderness. By that I mean that he doesn’t avert his eyes, or yours, from harshness lived or observed ... Astonishingly good.” - Bernard Zuel (SMH)

“Sydney singer-guitarist Jesse Younan has a percussive fingerpicking style reminiscent of sharpening knives, and he sure knows how to use them.” - Michael Dwyer (The Age)

“Jesse Younan sets himself apart from the ‘another man, another guitar, another singer/songwriter’ pack in two ways. Firstly Younan’s is one of the more talented acoustic guitarists treading the boards, his fine picking style sitting him somewhere between the folk of Richard Thompson and the the blues of Tim Buckley. And secondly the Tim Buckley compassion doesn’t stop there, for there are moments, flashes, when Younan’s finely timbered mellifluous vocals begin to soar in a way that touches on the Buckleyesque” - Chris Peken (Alternative Media Group)

Jagged Little Singalong - Spotted Mallard (MELB)

After multiple sell out shows in Melbourne and Sydney, Tom Dickins, Alison Avron and Lady Sings It Better are celebrating the 21st Birthday of Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill at the Spotted Mallard.

Flanked by an array of Melbourne muso's, the four singers will play the album in it's entirety for your 90's nostalgic listening pleasure.

This production started as a facebook status, was put on sale as an experimental joke, and then promptly sold out two seasons in Melbourne and Sydney. It is wildly irreverent - in equal parts loving and hating all of the memories the album conjures up.

Audiences are encouraged to bring their A-game angst-shout-sing voices to the party at the Spotted Mallard on the 23rd of June.

Given the show's history, booking in advance is highly recommended. Please email reservations@spottedmallard.com to reserve a seat/table.
Doors 6pm, showtime 8:30pm

It's crap but it's brilliant
It's great but it's really not
It's old but it's golden, yeah!
And what it all comes down to
Is an album that hasn't really had a tribute yet
So put one hand in your pocket and the other one... on a ticket.
